With considerably less memes (compared to the McGregor and Mayweather fight), solid fighters, and a full card that looks promising with Demetrious Johnson and Amanda Nunes, here’s why UFC 215 is shaping up to be another event we’ll be talking about long after the winners are announced.
(Flyweight Title Fight)
Demetrious Johnson is well on his way to break records with his consecutive UFC title defenses, but “The Tazmexican Devil” is no pushover. If Borg locks him in with a submission hold, the underdog might walk away with the belt. This fight reminds me of UFC 191 Demetrious Johnson vs. Dodson(watch here).
(Bantamweight Title Fight)
Being one of the main events of UFC 215, this Bantamweight belt match is the icing on the cake. This fight was intended to happen at UFC 213, but Amanda Nunes had to back out due to illness. These two have fought previous with Amanda Nunes winning at UFC 196(watch here).
UPDATE: I hope to stream for the first time on youtube and twitch.tv during the UFC 215 fights. I’ll give my thoughts plus live draftkings results. There was a question in a previous post on what I use to watch UFC fights. I use an Amazon Fire stick streaming FS1 on sling.tv for the prelims and pay per view for the main. However, I of course do not show any of the fights in my stream due to copyright.
Francis Ngannou’s climb in the heavyweight ranks are over, with this fight determining whether or not he’s going to fight for the heavyweight championship. In this particular fight Francis Ngannou is up against Santos, who is a former heavyweight champion coming off a TKO loss at UFC 211 back in May. If Ngannou can keep his winning streak going, we could see him fighting for the heavyweight championship in no time.
Rafael Dos Anjos
Rafael did score an important win in his welterweight debut, but his career has suffered some serious setbacks. Whether it be losing back to back fights with Eddie Alvarez and Tony Ferguson or his scrapped fight with McGregor at UFC 196, he still has a lot to prove to gain some ground.
This could be the reason as to why he’s involved in this risky fight with Magny. Magny might be a veteran with a lot on his hands, but he knows how to manage and could walk away with a win.
It’s been over ten years since Gilbert fought in the featherweight division, but he’ll be greeted by Jeremy Stephens at UFC 215, who has also had a hard time in the lightweight division. Both fighters have been around for quite some time and some may argue that they’re past their prime, but many agree that Stephens could be the clear winner due to his young age and comfort with his weight. Gilbert is a long time UFC legend. If you ever want to watch one of the best fights ever… watch Gilbert Melendez vs. Diego Sanchez UFC 166(watch here)
Sara McMann is a former bantamweight contender who has been on fire lately. Although she has lost to names such as Amanda Nunes, Miesha Tate, and Ronda Rousey, her recent fights have made us forget about those losses.
However, Ketlen Vieira has an impressive track record so far and she isn’t a force to ignore. Although she entered the UFC last year, her unanimous decision victory over Evans-Smith gave her a huge push to fight the likes of McMann.
Although some might claim that Latifi’s days of being a top ten contender might be long in the past, The Sledgehammer could pull something out of his sleeve and jump back to where he was in the division. From here, he could climb up the ranks.
Both men have impressive credentials, with Cejudo being an Olympic gold medalist and Reis being a former EliteXC Champion. However, Cejudo’s career is just starting out and the odds are in his favor. UFC is well aware of what this fight can mean for Cejudo and we’re looking forward to his “wrestling in reverse” strategy to keep Reis on his toes.
Between Gavin Tucker putting on a great fight in February and Rick Glenn being a former featherweight champion, this matchup is pretty solid and deciding a clear winner is nearly impossible.
Since both fighters have worked with the UFC for years and have had little improvement, this fight could determine whether or not one of them can stay with the company. Between their .500 UFC records and unfortunate circumstances during their respective UFC careers, this fight is looking like a battle to remain employed.
